The inside of Calera Chapel, originally called Mission Mary, the only remaining building in the now empty town of Calera, roughly three miles West of Balmorhea, Texas, March 12, 2024. According to Betty Armstrong of Balmorhea, Texas, and Mark Dent, journalist for Texas Monthly, Calera Chapel was originally built by the Mexican-American settlers in the community of about one hundred people in the early 1900s. By the 1940s, after Calera's residents abandoned the town in search of work, the chapel sat empty and abandoned. But in 2002 the Calera Foundation, a non-profit organization with a mission to restore the historic structure, began renovations on the abandoned chapel, culminating in a dedication in May of 2003. Today, the one-room chapel has reopened to the public.
